President’s report

June 3rd, 2010

Last weekend I acted as the Club Official required at competition games. It was an opportunity to see our younger players in action. One U7 team seemed to stand out for their sheer vigour and enthusiasm.

At half-time the coach used all of his experience and knowledge about the psychology of 7 year olds by getting them to stand in a closed small circle and place hands at the centre. Loudly, he called “Now, a big fat ….NORTHS”. The boys responded in perfect harmony, not with …NORTHS…. but the full score; “a Big Fat Norths”.

The incident reminded me why, every weekend, we dash around with our young players. It is to support them to learn values such as teamwork, and ultimately to become good men and citizens.

The power of rugby lays in it its capacity to help young people to understand themselves and others; to learn about fairness; to compete with dignity; and to develop good habits which become virtues. Rugby also allows us to begin to answer one of the key questions for the 21st century: How can we work better together? These overarching goals do nothing to detract from the goals of enjoyment and fun of the game.

During the week, our Registrar and former President, Kerry Partridge resigned. We are very grateful to Kerry for steering the Club over the past two years. The new Registrar will be appointed at the Management Committee Meeting next Wednesday evening 9th June. In the meantime, Emma (Babao) will act as Registrar. While on the item of members of the Management Committee, I want to say that your current hard-working committee is as good as you will get in any club. I am indeed very grateful for the endless hours they put into the Club. You are welcome to join us especially in the new developments and club structures.

Finally, you will have noted the drive by the Management Committee to ensure all players are registered and have paid their fees for 2010. The Club is required by law to exercise a duty of care; fees pay for insurance, competition levies and other costs. Without this payment the Club cannot operate. Hence, the policy: “No pay. No play”. So if you haven’t addressed this matter yet please give it your urgent attention.

Yours in Rugby,

Leo Bartlett
President, NBJRU

Rugby extravaganza

Congratulations to the Harvey and Lutton families who are neck and neck for the book sellers prize of one silver family ticket to the Wallabies V Ireland.

Keep up the great work. Only a very small number of books (17) have been returned so please make a mighty effort and return tickets to us preferably by 4 June for drawing on 11 June. All tickets must be returned sold or unsold. This is a major fundraiser for the club.

Please get behind it.

The tickets have been selling well to opposition team supporters at our home games. Please come and get more tickets if you wish. Volunteers to sell the tickets at the Seniors home games on Saturday would also be welcome. If you can help out see Linda Ray on Friday at training.

Hot meals and the big screen DVD for kids

Please support the club by enjoying the expanding range of hot meals from the canteen. The DVD will be on again on Friday night for the littlies.

President’s message

May 20th, 2010

Dear Parents and Players

It is now twelve weeks since I was elected President of the North Brisbane Junior Rugby (NBJR) Club. Since that date I have been busy with a group of hard working committee members. During this time, I have also moved around among parents and players, as well as members of the Senior Club (the North Brisbane Senior Rugby Club) and the Bustards, those highly reverred and regarded “golden oldies”. All three groups (Seniors, Juniors and Bustards) now constitute the North Brisbane Rugby Club.

Two observations I might make since early March. Your junior club committee now has eleven hard working volunteers – a situation much improved on 2009 when there were too few volunteers to ensure your sons received the best possible support in growing them to good young people and rugby players. I want to acknowledge in particular the contribution of the former President, Kerry Partridge and her small band of workers. Kerry together with others continues to serve the Club. They have been responsible for drafting a new structure to ensure better club operations. From henceforth working operations will be identified by both a rugby focus and an administrative focus. I shall speak more about these new developments in a later letter and at the same time seek your views on best support structures to make a more efficient and effective club.

A second observation is that the club as a whole is on the brink of a cascade of changes, relating to the two matters mentioned above. First, there is our own restructure during 2010. Second, changes will be involved in the integration of the three sections in the club (Seniors, Juniors and Bustards). It might be likened to creating one nation with three systems; and as one senior committee member keeps reminding us, the new collaboration among sections, “One club, one team”.

To support this bigger restructure, an overarching committee has been implemented to guide the NBRU Club. It consists of two members from each of the three identifiable sections. This will affect all aspects of the financial, legal and player operations of the club and its groups. As the season progresses I shall keep you informed of developments. One certainty you might take away with you from this communication is that your sons will receive better coaching support, increased opportunities in moving from younger to older age groups, and the potential for continuity in moving from junior to senior status as a rugby player.

I, together with the NBJR committee am committed to these kinds of restructuring changes while building stronger sections within the Club. I am happy to respond to your enquiries. You will find my contact details (and those of committee members) on the Junior Club website (www.nbjb.com.au) currently being tweaked to provide better communication within the club.

Best wishes,

Leo Bartlett

President, NBJR Club

Norths Rugby Inc.

May 2nd, 2010

Three Norths entities have joined together under the banner of ‘Norths Rugby Inc.’ to manage the affairs of the Shaw Road clubhouse and fields.

For the first time in over ten years, Norths Rugby Inc. has a lease over the facility and a management group consisting of representatives from Norths Senior club, the Bustards and the Juniors will manage both the day-to-day operations of the facility as well as set some long-term plans in place so that the facility develops as we do.

The Juniors will contribute financially through some of our fees and our fundraising , including food and beverage sales. Everything the Norths Rugby Inc. committee raises will be directed back into the facility.

High on the list of priorities will be the maintenance of three high quality fields, upgrade of the dressing rooms, toilets and kitchen and additional elements that make a visit to Norths enjoyable and safe. Every dollar will go back into the club and its members - something we haven’t enjoyed at Norths for a long time!

As always, your support of our Friday night food, our raffles, doubles and dinners and other fun activities throughout the year will ensure that we make these plans a reality.
